Stereo installed (finally)
My buddy's shop just got the HHR LAN adapter in. It is made by Metra, and plugs right into the stock harness and into the aftermarket radio. Since mine has the sub and amp in the back, the harness has 4 RCA jacks that plug into the front and rear radio outputs. And, somehow, the sub works. I am not using my radio amp as I originally planned-my speaker wires are all in the back near the amp. If I want to do that in the future, I will have to run new speaker lines through the car. For the time being, I am using the Pioneer amp that came with the car, and it sounds a million times better (and louder) with my head unit. I did swap the HHR 'premium' speakers for my old Rockford Fosgates. I kept the pillar tweeters-my friend said they were fine. My next plan is to use one set of the RCA cables I have already wired and hook up another sub with a nice mono amp. The only problem so far is that the adapters dont fit in the stock radio compartment (my new radio adapter has a pocket that takes up the space at the bottom) so I have to rewire everything tomorrow and relocate the adapters behind the radio compartment in the console.

Did not do pictures yet because it is dark and the installation is not complete. Not much to photograph regarding the install-Just a box with wires that are color coded to connect to the new head unit yuu are hooking up. I will get the part number tomorrow when I go back down to the car. What I want to take pictures of are the new flames he did off my headlights.

cool That would be great the part# Thanks dude

The part number is GMOS-LAN-04. The box says it is by Axxess, but the bill says Metra. It is for the amplified sound system 2006 HHR. Availablity is very scarce, according to my friend.

Almost finished now. Pulled apart the back and dropped in an old Carver M 240 amp set in mono mode for my 10 inch Aura sub in a prefab ported enclosure. The amp fit like a glove right next to the battery. (The top piece of plastic just snaps off for easy access) I got the right thread nuts for the pos and neg battery terminals to make connections easy (plus the bottom of the factory nut is tapered to hold the battery plate in place better). Kick ass base now. I can not imagine anyone needing more than 1 10 inch. As my 11 year old son said when he listened to the music 'the whole car shakes'. I can not believe how great it sounds with the factory amp. Plenty loud and very clear. Next I have to put everything back in the trunk and neaten the wires so I can take photos. The way it is, I will use a quick disconnect harness for the sub speaker (Axtually an R/C battery connector from Radio Shack). This way, I can easily remove the sub box for more trunk space. I still have the factory sub working so it wont sound too terrible.

Here is where I placed the amp. I want to drill some holes in the cover to help keep it cool. Sub box takes up substantial space. But I can always unplug it-stock sub still works (if you call that working :P )

that area is vented by the battery there is a vent between the bumper and the body wall on the back passenger side. it is not visible unless you have the bumper off. here is a pic when i was 2 toning shaggy. you will see it by the tire

Thanks CJ-I spoke to Mike and he told me the same thing. Kind of glad because I realized that holes in the plastic could let water in if I open the back when it is raining. Now I just have to take care of the alternator whine I just noticed. It is loudest at idle, becomes higher pitched at about 1500 RPM, then goes away. Mike said to check the ground first (I am directly to the battery) then the RCA (I ran mine along the passanger side-so I will try an extra cable I have down the middle as a -*test*-('") to see if it helps). If that doesnt help, it may be time for a new amp. The Carver is probably about 20 or 25 years old.
