Steering Wheel Radio Controls
These instructions are for the 2006 HHR. The part numbers may differ for the 2007 & beyond, as may some of the instructions. Please read entire thread to see if info for 2007 has been posted. This post will explain in detail, how to add the radio controls to your HHR steering wheel. I have listed the part numbers needed below for 2006, that were required at the time of this thread. The parts are very hard to come by at this point, but can be obtained through websites shown below, although one or more parts may be put on backorder. http://gmpartsdirect.com or http://www.partszoneonline.com/index.php Part # 15234343* HARNESS Part # 15842365* SWITCH Part # 15234337* COVER UPDATE: HERE is a place that has steering wheel controls for 06-08 according to their site. Others have ordered them and the colors may differ, but you could paint them any number of colors so that the two match controls match. . Prices on these parts will vary, depending on where you obtain them, but you're looking at less than $60.00 including shipping at the present time...but the page above could be a little less. You might try contacting them by phone 1-866-835-7278 X 84 for Chevy. I got a quote from several dealers for up to $275 for parts and labor. If I can do this, so can any of you. Just follow the instructions and you should be fine. If anyone has any additional tips on this mod, please feel free to add them. Before starting, disconnect the positive battery cable. 1. Eat your wheaties and take 2 of these before starting. If you smoke...take your cigarettes with you...you're gonna need them to calm your nerves. 2. Put the switch assembly into the new cover and make sure everything snaps into place. 3. Insert an allen wrench or other small metal object straight into one of the little holes and push towards center of the steering wheel and you will feel the clip move, that holds the horn assembly in place. 4. Apply pressure to the allen wrench/metal tool, holding it in place with one hand and use other hand to apply pressure inward until clip holding it in place releases. Clip is made out of metal, so it takes some strength in order for it to release. (This is why you needed the wheaties.) 5. Once enough pressure is applied, the clip will free itself and then you can do the same thing to the other side. 6. Once both sides are free, let the horn assembly hang by the wires during remainder of this process. 7. Take a phillips screwdriver and remove the covers from both sides...trust me, it makes things much easier to work with. 8. Once you have these out, you will be able to remove the harness ends much easier. Have the new harness handy, so you can see the 3 harness ends you need to remove from the steering assembly. The ones that go behind the brackets are a PITA to get through the steering column hole, so cut those hummers off and save yourself a lot of aggravation. 9. Using a small screwdriver or other metal object, gently lift up on the retainer that holds the last harness end in and pull it straight towards you until it has freed itself. Throw it as far as you can...it will make you feel better. Have another cigarette. 10. Plug all the harness ends into their corresponding places. 11. Put the switch covers back into their respective places and tighten them down. Then stash the wires back into the open areas on each side so they are out of the way. 12. Take horn/airbag assembly and gently push it back into place until you hear it snap into place and you are done, unless you disconnected the battery cable. Turn the igniton and radio on and -*test*-('") to make sure everything works. Mine did and I nearly fell out of my HHR. This mod is great and I love it already. My boyfriend was totally amazed when he came back home and found that I had actually accomplished this task. He was there when I started, but I told him to leave, as he was making me very nervous and I didn't think he needed to learn any more swear words than he already knows. I hope you have enjoyed this mod. If you have any questions, please feel free to post them on this thread. All comments are welcome, so please share your success stories with us. Credit for the original idea for this mod goes to a fellow HHR owner named Steiny. I will get in contact with steiny when I can to see if I may use his photos, however, with the detailed instructions above, you may not need them. Thanks Steiny...this is an awesome mod. :D

Which Radio
HI there, Can you tell me which radio you need to have for this MOD to work? Also the pics would really help if you can post them. Thanks, Chuck 2006 HHR Sport Red 1250 miles

first off, :welcome: to the forum and dont forget to post a intro in the Introductions area and of course we love pics i talked to Deb who did it and she thinks it works w any so long as HHR radio. i would bet you get more features out of the premium radios but work with all

SMOKE- 02-11-2007

This will work with any of the stock HHR radios as far as I know. I added the photos from the guy who took them in my original post. The controls have a mute button, up and down volume and the seek buttons, so it should be the same regardless of what stock radio you have in your HHR.

Anyone out there have any better; and more detailed pictures showing exactly where and how the new wiring harness hooks up in side the wheel? I just got my parts today; and... looking at the pictures here, its the only part that I am confused about. I don't see where the new connectors plug into.

CowboyBornLate- 03-06-2007

Deb did her's herself, so perhaps she could be of some help. You may want to send her a PM... CBL

Ok I did it! Just as this entire thread describes, it was easy! I had to cut the wires of the existing Harness however; because they were "attached" the back of the wheel and I could not pull the harness out without cutting the wires. Now its all said and done; the new controls work wonderfully... the Steering wheel looks fine, as all colors match up just fine. Except for one minor glitch... not sure how this happened but I suppose I'll have to figure out why and how... the "lever" for actvating the Turn Signals, no longer snaps back into its "off position" when I turn my wheel back straight after taking a turn. I have to flick it myself now to knock it back into its off position. A little annoying; but... well I have no idea how it happened to come about that its doing that now because I wasn't doing anything where that lever is located... and none of the wires that I cut had anything to do with it... I only cut the existing Wiring Harness so I could pull it out and trash it. I'm sure there's maybe something in there that maybe got bumped or knocked outa whack or something... if I can't figure it out, I guess I'll live with it.

SMOKE- 03-07-2007

Glad to hear you got them working....it's much easier to do than it sounds. Not sure what happened with the turn signal...but I remember someone else on another forum saying the same thing happened to them. I didn't have any issues, so I'm not sure what to tell ya. I personally love this mod.

replacing steeringwheel bowtie
Any ideas on how one might replace the bowtie on the steering wheel? The puny horn didn't seem to be enough for my wife and she thought that hitting the steering wheel harder might make it lounder. Needless to say it didn't make the horn louder but it put a purty little dent in the steeringwheel! The dealer told her that we'd have to replace the whole driver airbag! What I'd really like to do is replace the bowtie with 'HHR' Any advice would be more than welcome

You can't even order just the centerpiece. Sorry.

JKingDVM- 04-14-2007

Mike, If you don't mind my asking, where did you get Bob's steering wheel emblem made? And might I see a pic of it?

CJ N Shagy- 04-14-2007

When i painted my center on the wheel, I left the bowtie chrome and it looks really nice alot of work though

JKingDVM- 04-15-2007

It looks incredible! The only question I have about replacing that though is the safety factor. If I have the airbag go off will I have the bowtie imprinted on my forehead?

CJ N Shagy- 04-15-2007

I painted it while in the car and did not remove any of the steering wheel. tape, lots of newspaper and paint, no biggie
