Sonic Drive-In Friday night
Sonic Drive-In turns into a car show every Friday night here in Bakersfield. We finally got a few HHRs over there to represent our new hot rods. Last night there were about 75 cars. Everything from Jeeps to 34 Fords to 57 Chevys... and yes, even a PT Cruiser. But the 3 HHRs, two red Spring Editions and out little black hot rod, drew their fair amount of attention. Now I'm stoked for more mods to show off what these little trucks can really be! Here are just a couple of pictures... I just realized by looking at the pictures that my 9 year old is turning into a thug! At least I caught it early enough for an intervention! haha My girls... Tailgatin'!

you need it lowered and triple lakes if they come out w an SS, i will get either black or repaint midnight metallic blue and then Chrome it up old school chrome everywhere w triple lake side pipes

You're right! Getting it lowered is going to change the look completely! My Gold-Lines are sitting down at SoCal right now. I just haven't had time to go get them and put them on. I was planning on having the dealer put on my running boards when I was down there but now I am thinking of doing custom running boards with functional side pipes hidden inside and the outlet coming out at the rear.

sounds like a real good plan

I've seen a few, not in an HHR of course, done this way at hot rod car shows. I really like that look.

Like this? This is on a PT, but it can't be that hard to modify for the HHR.

Similar but not quite. I'll try to mock something up in Photoshop. The stock HHR running board drops down a bit below the actual rocker. I want to make the running board go pretty much straight across from the fender extensions with no drop. And then put a square or oval exit at the back for a matching tip.

Here you go, Mike... I don't know if you can tell from the Photoshop... But I want to take a set of factory running boards and move the tread surface up flush with the rockers - just low enough that the bottom of the doors will clear. Then I want to get rid of the outward curve of the tread section and make it run flush from front to rear with the fender extensions. And then a stainless rectangular tip incorporated into the rear section.

See my reply to your other post. Not enough room due to the low body flange. Isn't PS great! I wish real life were as easy! I've been working on this for over 6-months now and still have not come up with a viable solution. PT Bob's kit was the closest we could figure - but the (unsheilded) plastic fuel tank and lines are still an issue. Eventually something will pan out though.

Oh well.. Like you said in the other thread, we'd end up with 'ground effects' under the running boards because of having to extend it downward. Not bad though. It would be about the same as the side pipes being underneath the running boards, only they would be hidden. But even without the side pipes, I may still like it just for the integrated running boards.

SoCalHHR- 09-24-2006

Agreed, I think the "integrated pipes/boards" thing will totally sell. We just need to bring it to market...

Nice PSP Songman! That's sweet looking and if anyone can get-er-done it's SoCal! Looks like he's already been at it on this one... nice pics from the Sonic too! Looks like y'all had a great time! Thanks for sharing! CBL
